Repairs & Restoration
My method of working mirrors that of the other talented luthiers I have worked with and learnt from over the years: namely to tread lightly, taking great care to preserve the original instrument, as the maker intended. Ensuring that it can continue to be played and enjoyed for decades and hopefully centuries to come.
My Approach
Whenever I take on a new repair or restoration, I try to explain in detail what I think needs doing in order to reassure my clients: it can be an unsettling prospect to hand over a beloved instrument, and trust the luthier to do a great job.
Some of my clients have been playing their instruments for over 40 years, with all sorts of wear and tear incurred along the way: when I am then entrusted to put things back in order. These musical instruments hold a very special place in people’s lives. So I fully understand the need to go through each part of a repair or restoration.
I hope that this one to one communication makes the whole process a pleasure. I sometimes send my clients stage photographs too, especially for larger restorations. It’s great to have a record, and the before and after images illustrate the transformation my work can bring about.
